Chinese Medicine and Pregnancy

Pregnancy Acupuncture

Treatment with Chinese medicine is often continued in early pregnancy to support and maintain maternal and foetal wellbeing. Acupuncture has a long history of safe and effective treatment protocols during pregnancy. It can help assist with the following:

  • Relieve morning sickness
  • Boost energy
  • Treat fluid retention/edema
  • Resolve digestive issues
  • Treat sciatica
  • Prevent miscarriage
  • Relieve constipation, heartburn and acid reflux
  • Hypertension
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Pre-eclampsia

First Trimester
(0-12 weeks) The first trimester of pregnancy is an extremely important developmental period for your growing embryo and we recommend weekly treatments. Regular acupuncture treatments are advised for anyone with a history of miscarriages or threatened miscarriages, bleeding or cramping. It can also help with morning sickness and fatigue.

Second Trimester
(13-28 weeks) During this time, when the pregnancy is strong and stable, treatments are only necessary fortnightly to monthly. We focus on reducing risk of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and addressing concerns such as heartburn, oedema, anxiety and muscular pain.

Third Trimester
(29-40 weeks) Later in pregnancy, from around 36 weeks, acupuncture can help with turning breech babies and slowly preparing the body for labour. Women are recommended to participate in pre-labour treatment, which has been shown to reduce medical induction and emergency caesarean numbers. It encourages cervical ripening and shortens labour time, as well as
encouraging optimal foetal positioning and turning breech babies.

We teach acupressure location and technique that can be used during birth to aid pain. Natural induction is also offered if needed.
